Screening for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Aortic aneurysm is a pathological dilation of the artery wall. It is most often found in the abdominal aorta. It is a dangerous disease, as if it is not diagnosed and treated promptly, there is a possibility of rupture of the arterial wall due to the continuous dilation.
Aneurysm rupture is a very serious complication, with a mortality rate of up to 90%.
The majority of abdominal aortic aneurysms do not cause symptoms, except when they rupture. This is why it has been described as the “Silent Killer”.
Risk factors for the existence of arterial aneurysms:
- Male gender.
- Age > 65 years
- Smoking
- Atherosclerotic lesions in other vessels
- Heredity. 1st degree relative with a patient who developed an aneurysm
- Patients with other peripheral aneurysms (e.g. popliteal aneurysm)
The Preventive Checkup includes:
- Ultrasound Examination, at the price of 20€
- In case of a positive diagnosis, free appointment with a Vascular Surgeon for information, prescription, monitoring protocol.
