Mobile phone dependence and addiction: How to break free from addiction & deal with the phenomenon

Did you know that application designers and mobile designers use the color red in the notifications we receive on our mobile devices because it manages to attract and maintain our attention for a long time?

Or that autoplay functions are designed in such a way as to prevent our choices, according to our past searches?

As a society, we are experiencing drastic changes in relation to technological developments that “run” at the speed of light and change our data daily.

Social media has invaded our lives for good and access to technology for young and old is available at any time and anywhere.

Under these conditions, it is logical to develop relationships of dependence with electronic devices and more so with our mobile phone, which is a small extension of our hand. Certainly, our daily lives have become easier to a large extent, however, an equal number of problems have also entered our lives.

Adults often criticize the younger generation for their addiction to new technologies. In reality, however, they are the ones who are spending more and more time on their electronic devices, reducing the quality time they spend with their children and family every day.

So in order to protect your children from addiction to electronic devices, as parents, you should start first of all with yourself.

Make the appropriate changes in their lives in order to be a role model for the values and ideals you want to convey to your children.

Below are some useful tips to avoid the “traps” set by mobile designers and reduce your dependence on your mobile phone:

Turn off all notifications, except those sent by your friends. Notifications can be useful when they convey information that requires special attention, such as a text message from your child or an email from your boss. However, most notifications come from platforms, not people, designed to distract you. Go to the menu, settings and turn off everything except for message notifications and other important applications for you such as your email.

Make your screen black and white – If you turn your mobile screen to black and white (grayscale mode), using it will no longer be so fun.

Remove distracting apps from your home screen – Keep only your email, maps, calendar, and anything else you use on a daily basis on the home screen. Move any other apps (games, movies, etc.) to an internal folder or to a second or third page of the screen. When you don’t see them, you’re less likely to look for them, and this way you’ll limit their use.

Type to search for apps – Clicking on an icon is very easy and often we do it mechanically. However, when we get into the process of typing the name of the app, we reconsider whether or not we want to deal with the app at that moment.

Remove Social Media apps from your home screen – Prefer to visit your Facebook and Instagram accounts from your computer. This way you will limit the time you waste on social media through your mobile phone and the easy access you gain through it.

Get rid of the mobile phone from the bedroom – Do not leave your phone next to the bed at night and make sure to charge it in any other room besides your bedroom. Buy an old-fashioned alarm clock and keep the mobile phone away from the covers.

Mobile application that helps you reduce its use – Mobile application to overcome the mobile phone. As you heard! It may seem contradictory, but it is absolutely true. There are applications available to download to your mobile phone that let you know how much time you spend surfing the internet or in various applications, giving you feedback to help you reduce your usage, as well as useful tools that can help both children and adults spend as little time as possible on their mobile phones.
