Affiliation with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
Athens Medical Group has entered into an international agreement, joining forces with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, a world-leading institution in scientific expertise, experience and know-how. The agreement is the result of extensive preparation and cooperation between the two leading institutions.
Athens Medical Group’s CEO, Dr. Vasileios G. Apostolopoulos, and his counterpart at Imperial College Healthcare, Professor Tim Orchard, formally signed the agreement at a modest public ceremony in the historic Old Admiralty Building in the heart of Whitehall. The ceremony was attended by the Greek Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Mr. Ioannis Tsaousis, and the representative of the UK Government, Minister for Exports Lord Malcolm Offord.
Athens Medical Group thus becomes the first hospital group in Europe to join Imperial College Healthcare’s International Affiliate Network. The two leading institutions will exchange experience, expertise, medical know-how and knowledge, advancing their shared goal of delivering medical excellence and world-class services.
A strategic partnership for medical excellence between Greece and the United Kingdom
At the signing, the representative of the British Government, UK Minister for Exports Lord Malcolm Offord, stated: “This is a pivotal agreement for both countries, as we learn from each other about medical excellence and exchange best practices. By working with international partners, we develop capabilities, exchange knowledge, share technology, build resilience, strengthen our services and raise standards. Working together, we advance clinical protocols and treatment methods and improve the overall quality of care provided, both nationally and internationally.”
On behalf of Imperial College Healthcare, Chief Executive Professor Tim Orchard said, among other things: “This is a very important agreement for us. We are particularly pleased to be partnering with Athens Medical Group, which we recognise as a leading healthcare provider with outstanding scientific research and expertise.”
The Group’s CEO, Dr. Vassilis G. Apostolopoulos, noted: “The alliance with Imperial College Healthcare and the honour of being the network’s first partner in Europe are of strategic importance to our Group and to healthcare in Greece. Cooperation, the transfer and exchange of medical know-how, practices of medical excellence, treatment protocols and guidelines are all extremely important—and, of course, all of this is for the benefit of the patient.”
Through this agreement, Athens Medical Group gains privileged access to specialised advisory services and advanced educational platforms, with leading experts who will work alongside the Group’s own leading physicians. Know-how and expertise will be exchanged regularly, with the shared aim of advancing healthcare solutions that improve the patient experience and treatment, particularly in oncology and across other fields. From the outset, the partnership will place particular emphasis on Athens Medical Group’s new International Oncology Center in Thessaloniki, which will open soon and become a point of reference for Europe and the Middle East.
The agreement with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (the sole academic partner of Imperial College London, ranked fourth among the world’s top ten universities in healthcare) reflects and underscores the Group’s strategic focus on international engagement and excellence, and, in the future, on research and education. At the same time, it highlights the Group’s steadfast, longstanding commitment to providing innovative, high-quality healthcare centred on people, reaffirming the pioneering role of Greece’s largest Greek healthcare group.
