GENETIC GUIDANCE

Premature newborns constitute a special category and a separate chapter of pediatrics in themselves…

Prevention of genetic diseases was and remains the most important way to control them.

The recognition and application of the laws of heredity is the basis of genetic prevention for families burdened with genetic diseases. Prevention in these cases is achieved after an accurate diagnosis of the nature of the disease.

Based on the existing knowledge about the mode of hereditary transmission, the real risks of recurrence of the condition and the existing possibilities of specific avoidance are developed in the family.

Genetic guidance or genetic counseling is the method that refers to the genes and the risks of recurrence of genetic diseases in a family.

In this way, it becomes possible, in many cases, to avoid the recurrence of a genetic disease, while at the same time, it becomes possible to reduce the anxiety and feeling of guilt, which unjustly exists in a hereditary family.

The guidance process aims to help families make their own logical decisions regarding reproduction and to adapt as best as possible to their situation. All couples have the right to know if they are at increased risk of having children with a genetic disease and what options are available in their case.

Couples who primarily need genetic counseling are the following:

  • Advanced maternal age

  • Family history of a confirmed genetic disease

  • Previous child with a serious / fatal disease or genetic disease

  • One or both members of the couple are confirmed or suspected carriers of a specific genetic disease.

  • Exposure to exogenous factors such as drugs, viruses, radiation

  • Simple concern about risk for genetic diseases, simply doing prenatal research.
