Athens Medical Center: New scientific data on avoiding lower limb amputations in patients with Diabetic Foot

The results of the research were published in an international, specialized journal on the treatment of the diabetic foot

The results of a study conducted by the Interdisciplinary Team for the Treatment of the Diabetic Foot, of the Athens Medical Center were published. The research concerned the course of the first 20 patients suffering from Diabetic Foot, with the aim of seeking a second opinion, before the amputation procedure. In a period of six months, the results were particularly encouraging, since all patients have preserved their lower limb.

The conclusions of the research, entitled: “Limb salvage in patients with severe critical limb ischemia after referral for a second opinion to a dedicated CLI center” were published in the prestigious scientific journal specializing in the treatment of the diabetic foot, entitled: “The International Journal of Lower Extremity Wounds”.

This publication comes as practical proof of the vital importance of creating corresponding specialized centers, which offer personalized and proper treatment of the diabetic foot. The goal of the creation of the Interdisciplinary Team for the Treatment of the Diabetic Foot is unambiguous: The prevention of amputations, the full mobilization of the patient and his reintegration into his daily life.

The Interdisciplinary Team for the Treatment of the Diabetic Foot, which was created for the first time at the Athens Medical Center, operates under the direction of Dr. Theodosios Bisdas, MD, PhD, Director of the 3rd Vascular Surgery Clinic of the Athens Medical Center. This Interdisciplinary Team is staffed by specialized physicians of different specialties, specifically diabetologists, infectious disease specialists, cardiologists, orthopedists and nephrologists, as well as paramedical staff. It is worth noting that the team is complemented by a number of specialist nurses who visit the patient at home, in order to complete the patient’s monitoring process.

It is very important to emphasize that the treatment of such cases requires organized hospital structures, state-of-the-art biomedical equipment, and a high degree of specialization. The creation of the unique in Greece, new certified Robotic Hybrid Surgery Center “PROMETHEUS”, new generation Discovery IGS 740 of GE Healthcare, as well as the use of all the latest technologies, make the Athens Medical Center a reference point in the prevention and treatment of the diabetic foot.

After the publication of the results of the research, Dr. Th. Bisdas, stated “The diabetic foot is a modern pandemic and is a particularly complex disease. Vascular surgery plays a primary role in opening the vessels in order to improve blood flow to the foot. However, this is not enough. We must provide the patient not only with comprehensive, high-quality health services, but also with the appropriate conditions so that he or she feels safe within the organized hospital structure of the Athens Medical Center. In each hospital of the Group, from a very early stage, special precautionary measures against COVID-19 cases were and are being implemented, which are updated for as long as necessary. In this way, the clinics continue their operation without interruption, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, based on the strictest approved health protocols.”
